Procedure for Mechanical Run Test of Centrifugal Pump

1.         Purpose

This Procedure describes the way SPF conducts Mechanical Run Test on Pumps.

2.         Application

This Procedure is applicable to Pumps to be supplied to…

3.         Reference

This Procedure Satisfies the requirements of:
            1. API 610
            2. Pump Data Sheets

4.         Responsibility

Quality Control is responsible for conducting the Test and issue of Test
Report/Certificate.

5.         Test Requirements

5.1       Each Pump Assembly shall be subjected to this Test.
5.2       The Test set up shall be suitable to run the pump at Rated Capacity at         approximately Rated Speed. The Test Setup shall be same as that for    Performance Test. Mechanical Run Test shall be conducted after successful             completion of Performance Test.
5.3       The test shall be conducted at Rated Capacity only.
5.4       Instruments:
Capacity          : Inductive Type Flow Meter of suitable range
Temperature    : Thermocouple thermometer
Noise               : Bruel & Kjaer Model 2237

6.         Test Procedure
6.1              Ensure the Pump is set up for test according to requirements.
6.2              Fill the system with water and ensure the all air is driven out of the loop.
6.3              Switch On the Control Panel and ensure the Electric Motor is connected properly
6.4       Open the Gate Valve in suction fully and Open the Gate Valves in Discharge little bit.
6.5       Switch On the motor and make sure the Direction of Rotation is proper
6.6       Slowly open the Discharge Gate Valve till the Pump Capacity is
Rated Capacity. Make sure there is no abnormal noise and vibration at the Pump.
Run the Pump at this condition for atleast 15 minutes.
6.7              The test duration will be 1 hour minimum. At interval of every 15 minutes measure and record the temperature at bearing housing near the bearings and ambient temperature.
6.8              Measure Noise at 5 locations, each at 1 meters distance from the equipment.
6.9              Prepare the Test Report giving the maximum temperature on bearing housings, ambient temperature and Noise.
6.10     Record the Test in Log Book

7.         Acceptance Criteria

The temperature rise on the bearing housing near the bearings shall not be more than 30 Deg. C

8.         Quality Record

            Certified Test Report.

  1. Dears,

In our plant after completing the construction activities and as a part of the commissioning activities, our plan is to conduct a mechanical run test for each pump with safe fluid e.g water, however, my question is that, if we have three pumps A, B and C shall we conduct the 4 hours mechanical run test for each pump individually or we can start the three pumps or two of them in parallel to perform the 4 hours MRT.
